“O Israel, stay away from idols! I am the one who answers your prayers and cares for you. I am like a tree that is always green; all your fruit comes from me.” Hosea 14:8
At the 11-month mark, I’ve watched our little son, Jonas, grow in many ways, and it’s all largely because he has a mom who loves him dearly. He’s growing physically and intellectually all because she takes great care to make sure he eats well, and she takes time to play with him and teach him every day. I don’t know to what degree he understands this at his young age, but if it wasn’t for her care and attention, he wouldn’t be where he’s at in this stage. But, I’m sure in time, he’ll know and appreciate all she’s done for him.
In the book of Hosea, God is speaking through the prophet, Hosea, and in chapter fourteen, God is calling Israel and Judah back to Himself. He’s telling them that the idols they have worshiped are useless and can do nothing for them and that He is the One who has answered their prayers and cared for them the whole time.
Isn’t it amazing to think that even in those times and moments in our lives that we may have thought we got the break we were looking for, or we thought our skills or connections were able to open a door of opportunity, that it was actually Him all along? That God, in His grace, goodness and mercy, was working on our behalf even when we may not have realized or acknowledge that He was actually the source of our blessing.
He is, and always has been, like an evergreen tree that never withers, giving us continual life and hope, even when we didn’t even know it.
Today, let’s be reminded that He, and He alone, is our source of life, the answer to our prayers, and our continuous provider.
