WHAT SHE SAW

“When the queen of Sheba realized how very wise Solomon was, and when she saw the palace he had built, 5 she was overwhelmed. She was also amazed at the food on his tables, the organization of his officials and their splendid clothing, the cup-bearers, and the burnt offerings Solomon made at the Temple of the Lord.” 1 Kings 10:4-5   Some years ago, I was tasked with remodeling an area in the church I was pastoring, so I set out to get ideas that would help me create the perfect look. Walls had been torn down, electrical had been redone and everything[…]

POWER TO FORGIVE

He fell to his knees, shouting, “Lord, don’t charge them with this sin!” And with that, he died. Acts 7:60  Forgiveness is given to those least deserving, which is what can make it so hard. It’s not easy to forgive, especially the one who isn’t seeking or asking for forgiveness. When someone isn’t sorrowful for what they have done, it makes it so much harder to forgive that person, especially when it’s personal. When you’ve been personally wronged, mistreated, or misrepresented it makes forgiveness a lot more difficult. As Stephen was being stoned by his accusers, his last words were,[…]

ASTOUNDED

“When they realized he was the lame beggar they had seen so often at the Beautiful Gate, they were absolutely astounded!” Acts 3:10  The key to modern day marketing is found in the testimonials. From late night infomercials, to emails and website pop-ups, marketers are trying to get us to buy their product or service. After they go through the process of showing us the product, they want to seal the deal in our mind by using testimonies from “people just like you and me.” Whether the person has lost 50 pounds in 3 months or grown all their hair[…]

THIS MUCH

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16  One of the fond memories I have of my kids as they were growing up was asking them, “Do you love me?” They would reply with a resounding, “Yes!”, to which I would then ask, “Well how much do you love me?” Then they would stretch their arms apart as far as they could go and say, “This much!” Thinking about it now just warms my heart. If you ask the Father that same[…]

HE CAME BACK

“Then Jesus told him, ‘You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me’.” John 20:29  It’s interesting how people can permanently label you just simply based on a past failure or mistake. Such is the case with Thomas, as many in the church world today still refer to him as “Doubting Thomas.” Yes, Thomas did doubt, and it would have been better if he, by the testimony of others, had just believed. But the good news is he became a very strong believer. And that was made possible all because Jesus Himself made a special[…]

OUR STRONG TOWER

“The name of the Lord is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe.” Proverbs 18:10  Most all of us can remember being afraid of “the boogie man” when we were children. For me, he was that invisible monster under my bead. I can remember walking out of my room, turning out the lights and then making a bee-line straight to my dad’s leg on which I’d wrap myself around. Turning back to that dark bedroom I would stick my tongue out toward “the monster.” It was my childlike way of letting the boogie man know I was safe[…]

RECOVER ALL

“Then David asked the Lord, ‘Should I chase after this band of raiders? Will I catch them?’ And the Lord told him, ‘Yes, go after them. You will surely recover everything that was taken from you’!”  1 Samuel 30:8 David’s confusion created an open door for the enemy to come in and attack him. In 1 Samuel 30, we see that while David had lined up with the Philistines to fight against his own people, Amalekite raiders invaded the town he had left behind, burned it to the ground and had taken away all of David and his men’s wives, children and belongings.[…]

MERCY AND RESTORATION

“Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.” Psalm 51:7  In 2 Samuel 11-12, we see that David committed the two “biggies.” Not only did he commit adultery, which is pretty bad, but he also committed murder. According to the Levitical Law, David should have been drug out to the center of the city and stoned to death. There was no ambiguity in the law when it talked about an “eye for an eye.” And, when David finally did repent for these heinous sins, it wasn’t like he did it[…]

COME TO THE TABLE

“Jesus was in the center of the procession, and the people all around him were shouting, ‘Praise God for the Son of David! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Praise God in highest heaven’!” Matthew 21:9 In 2 Samuel 9 we see the story of Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan and grandson of King Saul. As a young child, Mephibosheth was dropped by his caretaker as she fled Israel at the news of Saul and Jonathan’s deaths, and now he was crippled and lived in constant fear in Lo-debar. He lived in fear because of the assumption that[…]

THE ADVOCATE

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.” John 14:16 Webster’s Dictionary defines the word “Advocate” as one who supports or promotes the interests of a cause or group. The Greek defines “Advocate” as the Holy Spirit who would lead the followers of Jesus into deeper knowledge of the gospel truth and give them the divine strength needed to walk it out. Just before Jesus was to endure the crucifixion and then return to the Father, He tried to prepare His disciples by informing them of the things about to[…]
