Make Room

A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men. Proverbs 18:16

No greater story illustrates the above Proverb any more than the story of the women in 2 Kings 4, who built a room on her home for the Prophet Elisha.  One day when Elisha and his servant passed through her town, she invited them to her home for a meal and gave Elisha an open invitation to “come by and eat whenever you’re passing through.” Where I come from we call that “Southern Hospitality” and it’s a real thing, even though inviting passersby over for a meal may not be as common as it once was.

One day she said to her husband, “Let’s build a small room for him on the roof and furnish it with a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp. Then he will have a place to stay whenever he comes by.”  And so they did. In fact Elisha was so appreciative of her offering that he asked her what he could do for her and her family in return, to which she replied, “Nothing at all, we have everything we need.” But one thing Elisha and his servant noticed, was that she had no children and her husband was up in age.

Elisha said, “Next year at this time you will be holding a son in your arms!” To which she replied, “Whachyou talkin bout Mr. Willis?” Ok, that does make me a little dated, but she did say “No, my lord!” she cried. “O man of God, don’t deceive me and get my hopes up like that.”  And, sure enough within the year she was holding a brand new  baby boy, which was the fulfillment of the desire of her heart.

Every time we give and sew we are “making room.” We’re making room for God to bless us beyond what we can even conceive with our minds. What desire is in your heart that God has placed deep with in you that you have yet to see fulfilled? Let me encourage you today to keep giving and sewing where He shows you to give and by this time next year you may very well see the fulfillment too.
