“God has now revealed to us his mysterious will regarding Christ—which is to fulfill his own good plan.”  Ephesians 1:9

June 20, 2019 was the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing. What began as a presidential challenge from JFK, became a reality just seven years later. Buzz Aldrin had a plan to celebrate the landing that many may not know. Aldrin, a deacon in his church, had asked his pastor for a chalice, wine and bread to take with him to the moon. Once they landed on the moon’s surface the command center had the three-man crew take a one-hour break before opening the doors to the space capsule and walking on the moon. Aldrin saw this as the perfect opportunity to take communion. He knew the significance of the “out-of-this-world plan” God had to redeem mankind through sending his Son Jesus to earth, so Aldrin wanted to be the first one to celebrate and commemorate God’s plan from the moon.

Ephesians 1:10-14 gives us more detail to God’s out-of-this-world plan; And this is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth. Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan.God’s purpose was that we Jews who were the first to trust in Christ would bring praise and glory to God. And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his ownby giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago. The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this, so we would praise and glorify him.”

Today, we don’t have to be on the moon to celebrate His plan. We’ve been given the privilege to partake in this sacrament anytime and anywhere. But, as we do, we do so in remembrance of what Jesus did for all mankind.
