“Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13
The online dating site, eHarmony, has a set of ten rules for those feeling “unlucky in love.” One of these rules states the following: “If men aren’t interested in you, it probably isn’t because you aren’t a supermodel, it is probably because they can see how you feel about yourself. Think about how people are drawn to someone with confidence. A person with confidence seems to love life. … If you don’t feel confident, fake it until you do.”
I’m not so sure about the “fake it until you make it” part, but I certainly understand what’s being stated. Real, unshakable confidence has a lot to do with how someone sees themselves, and especially whether they see that they are loved.
So, where can we get this kind of love that breeds the kind of confidence we need? The truest, most lasting, deepest love can only be found in God’s love for us. Think about it. What defines the deepest kind of love possible? To me, it’s simple. The deepest kind of love possible is to be loved by someone who knows everything about you and still loves you unconditionally. And when I say everything, I mean everything!
I don’t know if it’s even humanly possible for anyone, aside from God Himself, to love us on that kind of level. To consider that He knows even our deepest thoughts, as crazy as they can be at times, and still loves us unconditionally almost seems impossible. Yet, it is possible, and not only possible, it’s a fact. This kind of love was demonstrated in Jesus and in His willingness to pay the price for our sin, so that we could receive His righteousness.
This kind of love was alsondemonstrated in Numbers when King Balak tried his best to get Balaam, a prophet, to curse Israel, but every time he tried to curse them it turned into a blessing. Not only was Balak not able to curse Israel, but in chapter twenty-four we see a picture of how God actually felt about Israel, in His love for them, despite all of their continued rebellion and sin.
Today, rest in the truth that God’s love for you is specific and unending and because of this, you will never be “unlucky in love.”
