“He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.” Ephesians 4:16
You’ve heard the phrase, “running around like a chicken with your head cut off.” Well, it should have scarred me for life the day I saw that happen for real! As a ten-year-old boy I’ll never forget seeing my granddaddy grab one of the chickens in his back yard and chop its head off. That chicken, which we would later eat for dinner, continued to run around the back yard for what seemed like forever, until he finally keeled over.
Interestingly, there are many people, and even believers, running around without a head. God never intended for us to run around like that. Instead, He wants Christ to be our “Head.” Ephesians 4:15 says, “Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church.”
His design is that, as Christ is the Head, we mature and, as a result, we walk together, work together, grow together and become full of love. In spite of all our differences we must make and keep “the main thing, the main thing,” and that can be summed up in the very next verse. Paul goes on to say in Ephesians 4:16, “He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.”
It seems like anything and everything comes to attack our “love walk.” But without love, we’re just doing our own thing. According to 1 Corinthians 13, we can do all kinds of “things,” and good things I might add, but if not done in love, it really doesn’t matter.
Let’s determine today, that with the help of His Spirit, we’ll let Him be the head of our lives and fill us with His love in every area of life. As we do, we’ll all see what a difference “love makes.”
