DOUBLE ANCHORED

“So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us.”  Hebrews 6:18

The salt air and warm sun set the stage for what I was hoping to be a relaxing kayak fishing trip. I knew the area pretty well and figured if I could anchor my kayak near enough to the channel, I would cast into the area with the hope of reeling in one fish after another. There was only one problem. I couldn’t get my anchor set well enough to hold me still. Despite my best effort, it seemed no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t keep myself from drifting in the stronger-than-it-seemed current, and it was hard even to paddle. It took a lot of effort just to keep from drifting too far away from my launch point. My day ended with me be wore out and not a single keeper.

The writer of Hebrews tells us that there is something that we can definitely count on when it comes to keeping us anchored in this life. In fact, according to Hebrews 6:18 we can be double anchored by His promise and His oath, both of which are unchangeable. So, what exactly is His promise and oath about? It’s the promise and oath that, once we have turned to Him as our refuge and received the promise of salvation, He will never change His mind. And that because Jesus represents us as  our eternal High Priest, we have been given access, through the inner curtain, into God’s presence. This strong and trustworthy anchor holds us securely in His hands and heart, and we can know, with confidence, that He will never leave us or forsake us.

Today, set your anchor in His oath and promise, and let your heart be filled with the hope that only He can give.
