“Let me now remind you, dear brothers and sisters, of the Good News I preached to you before. You welcomed it then, and you still stand firm in it.” 1 Corinthians 15:1
If you’re like most folks, you need a lot of reminders. In fact, as I’ve been sitting here reading and writing this post, I’ve received two reminders from my phone about an upcoming appointment. My “catchall reminder” is my wife. I’ll often end a text sharing some info with her and saying to her “don’t let me forget…”. Just recently she responded to me with, “I don’t know that I can remind you of everything you want me to remind you of” after I asked her again to not let me forget. Yes, it can be hard, if not impossible, to remember everything without the help of some reminders.
In 1 Corinthians 15, the Apostle Paul started out with a “reminder” to the Church at Corinth. He wanted them to remember, and most certainly never forget, the Good News that he once preached to them, that started them on their journey with Christ. He had given them a lot of info in this lengthy letter, but as he was drawing to a close, he wanted to leave them with this reminder to stay true to the message of the Gospel that they began with. Paul, himself, realized that in the Christian life you can shift your focus in a lot of directions like, evangelism, Gifts of the Spirit, moral character and more, all of which are important. But none is as important as keeping our focus on the Good News of Jesus Christ and His sacrificial, atoning death on the cross that brought to us the forgiveness of all our sins and right standing with the Father.
Today, let’s remind ourselves of God’s goodness and faithfulness to us in sending His Son to pay the debt we could never pay, so that we can enjoy abundant life and look forward to our one-day, future home in Glory.
