“Happy are those who hear the joyful call to worship, for they will walk in the light of your presence, Lord.” Psalm 89:15
Duck Commander, Phil Robertson, of the reality TV series, Duck Dynasty, became famous for his clumping together of the three words “Happy, Happy, Happy,” of which he titled a book. Phil explains to his readers that the only thing that can make one truly happy in life is having a relationship with Jesus.
David knew this truth long before Phil, and long before Jesus had even been born. How could this be possible? Because David knew about the blessing and happiness that comes from walking in the “Light” of the Lord. Later we can see, as it is written in John 8:12, that Jesus Himself is the personification of the Light.
But, according to Psalm 89:15, we see another piece and that is this “Happiness” is triggered through the joy of worship. When we worship something, we make the thing or person in which we are worshiping bigger. Some, sadly, make their problems and circumstances bigger, or they make other things like hobbies, work, and relationships bigger. But, as we know, though all of those things may be good, they themselves can never bring true and lasting happiness. One thing we notice when looking at this verse in the Amplified version is that the word “happy” is also “blessed.”
I was inspired recently as I observed the reaction of a friend of mine after both of his vehicles broke down. He had just moved to a new area for a new job in ministry and these two unexpected breakdowns couldn’t have come at a more inconvenient time. Yet he maintained his joy and didn’t allow those circumstances to derail him. Now that’s living a blessed life!
Today, worship and walk in the light of His presence and you’ll be happy, happy, happy and blessed!
